Checked, and honest about the gaps.
Citizenship is small, so it has to be checkable. Everything below is generated from the content itself on every build, and nothing here is a claim we cannot show you how to reproduce.
What we check
Every build| What is checked | Result |
|---|---|
| Practice questions in the bank | 201 — 159 multiple choice and 42 true or false |
| Questions tied to an official guide section | 201 of 201 (100%), each pointing at a canada.ca section |
| Exam format | 20 questions, 45 minutes, 15 to pass — checked 2026-10-12 |
| Study guide coverage | 12 chapters, 295 facts, and 9 facts the official guide still states in an older form |
| The test window | 30 days, 3 attempts, 14 sourced claims |
| Accessibility checks that passed | 40 of 40 — 27 colour pairs and 13 markup rules |
| Official links re-verified | 60 of 60 resolved on 2026-10-13 |
What is not finished
The honest version: the question bank has not been through subject-matter review yet, and the interface says so rather than hiding it.
- 0 of 201 questions reviewed by a subject-matter expert; 201 waiting
- 12 of 12 study chapters reviewed
- Accounts are real and saved on Citizenship’s server, but no payment exists yet, so nothing here is a purchase
- 13 sentences have a plain-language version, checked 2026-10-13
Accessibility
WCAG 2.1 AA, where it appliesWhat is checked automatically
Every update checks 25 colour pairs for contrast, so text is easy to read (at least 4.5 to 1) and borders are easy to see (at least 3 to 1). It also checks 13 rules that help people who use a keyboard or a screen reader, such as a label on every button and form field, a visible outline on whatever has focus, and reduced motion for those who ask for it.
- index.html declares a language
- exactly one main landmark per page (the app, the admin), tagged for the skip link
- a skip link precedes the navigation, and comes on screen when focused
- click handlers live on buttons and links, never on a div or span
- every input and select is tied to a label
- nothing takes a positive tabindex
- the focus ring is never removed, only restyled
- prefers-reduced-motion is honoured
- every table has a caption or label, and every header cell a scope
- a button whose label is only a glyph carries an aria-label
- a dialog says it is modal and what it is for
- artwork and glyphs that carry no meaning are hidden from assistive tech
- nothing focusable hides inside aria-hidden
What that does not prove
A passing script is not a passing experience. These are the limits, printed straight from the checker that ran:
- These are static checks. No screen reader was run, and no headless browser renders the page in this repository.
- Nothing here tests reading order, focus order, or whether an announcement makes sense in context.
- Colour contrast is computed from the palette, not sampled from the rendered page.
- No assistive-technology user has tested this build, and no audit from outside has either
If something here does not work with your setup, that is a defect in this app rather than in your setup, and it is worth reporting.
Plain words for the test's own vocabulary
Every term sourcedPlain-language mode is a rewrite of Citizenship's own instructions, nothing else. The exam questions, the study material and the sourced rules from IRCC are never softened: those are quoted from the government, so rewriting them would make them a paraphrase instead of a citation. Turning this on changes the sentences Citizenship writes, and the glossary below stays on screen either way.
- Discover Canada
- The government's own study guide for the citizenship test. It is free, and it is the only source the real test questions come from.Official definition ↗
- Permanent resident
- Someone allowed to live in Canada permanently. A permanent resident can apply for citizenship after meeting the residence requirement.Official definition ↗
- Citizenship grant
- The ordinary way an adult becomes a citizen. You apply, prove your language and knowledge, then take the oath.Official definition ↗
- The Oath of Citizenship
- The promise you make at the ceremony. It is the last step, and it is what actually makes you a citizen.Official definition ↗
- Test invitation window
- The 30-day period in the invitation IRCC sends you. All of your attempts have to happen inside it.Official definition ↗
- Hearing with a citizenship official
- What happens after three unsuccessful attempts. An official checks your knowledge of Canada by talking with you, and it is your last chance in this application.Official definition ↗
- Riding, or constituency
- The area of the country that one Member of Parliament represents. Your vote chooses the MP for your riding.Official definition ↗
- Responsible government
- The idea that the people who govern answer to the elected members, not to the Crown. If they lose the confidence of the House, they have to go.Official definition ↗
- Right of citizenship fee
- The smaller half of the application fee. You get this one back if the application is refused. You do not get the processing fee back.Official definition ↗
- Large print edition
- IRCC publishes Discover Canada in a large print PDF. It is the same guide with bigger type, and it costs nothing.Official definition ↗
